Mike Emery, Public Relations Coordinator and Lecturer University of Houston
Panelist: Discussion 1 (Captivating the Audience)

Mike Emery works for the University of Houston’s Office of University Communication. He coordinates public relations for several of UH’s liberal arts programs and departments including theater, music, art, creative writing, psychology and sociology. Mike also teaches Principles of Public Relations to students in UH’s School of Communication. In Fall 2007, he will begin teaching Public Relations Writing.

A 12 year communications veteran, Mike has worked in both the corporate and non-profit realms as a writer and editor. He is also a seasoned freelance entertainment journalist having covered popular music for magazines and weeklies such as Relix, Blues Revue, Blues Access, U.K.’s The Guitar Magazine, The Houston Press and The Met in Dallas. Artists interviewed include Isaac Hayes, Ron Isley, George Clinton, Black Sabbath’s Bill Ward, Burning Spear, Rob Thomas, Scarface and Bobby “Blue” Bland. Mike was also a writer and editor for Houston’s CitySearch.com office and the managing editor for the Latino news site Todos.com. Between 1997 and 2003, he was a frequent contributor to the Austin Chronicle’s DVD/Video column. Additionally, Mike has written for a number of community publications such as the Houston Defender and the Lakewood Advocate in Dallas.

Mike is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and is completing his master’s degree at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He is married to Sasha Mann-Emery and has two dogs, Babs and Cookie.
